VMG supplies the oil and gas industry innovative process simulation software and enthusiastic technical support. We believe we're a different kind of company and it shows in our products and services.
We provide software for the calculation of physical and thermodynamic properties of mixtures. Incorporated in Calgary, Alberta in 1999, VMG expanded to provide process simulation software and services, quickly becoming one of the leading players in the process simulation industry with more than 500 clients and thousands of users around the world.
Our process simulation software is continuously developed by our in-house staff of scientists and engineers with diverse backgrounds, including chemical engineering, process control, thermodynamics, and computer science. Our single goal is to produce the best simulator package that is user friendly, highly adaptable, easily configurable, and with the best possible physical property and thermodynamic estimations.
We are strongly focused on internal research and development, repeatedly reinvesting a significant portion of our gross income to it. In addition, we actively invest in research and development at the University of Alberta and University of Calgary in areas related to heavy oil production, processing, and upgrading.
Our offices are in Calgary, Houston, Barcelona, Tokyo, Beijing, Kuwait, Sao Paulo, Auckland, Cairo, Moscow, Seoul and Mexico City. Our clients include some of the world’s largest oil and gas producers as well as a wide variety of small, medium, and large size exploration, engineering, and hydrocarbon transportation companies in the world.

TONY VYSNIAUSKAS, Ph.D., P. Eng
President & Chief Executive Officer
Tony Vysniauskas received his Bachelor's and Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from Western University in London, Ontario. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary in 1980 where he studied the kinetics of gas hydrate formation. He co-founded Hyprotech Ltd. which introduced interactive process simulation for the oil & gas industry with HYSIM and later HYSYS. He served as Hyprotech’s CEO and President until it was acquired by AEA Technologies in 1997, whereafter he assumed the role of Executive Vice President for AEA Hyprotech. Dr. Vysniauskas joined Virtual Materials Group as CEO in 2012.
JAMES VAN DER LEE, Ph.D., P. Eng
VP Corporate Accounts
James van der Lee received his Bachelor's and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary. His thesis was on the subject of advanced process control and upon graduation in 2005, James joined VMG as support manager. His interests and specialties lie in amines, sulfur, gas processing, dynamics and upstream/shale applications. He is keen on adapting technology to solve contemporary process challenges.
RAUL COTA, Ph.D., P. Eng
VP Research and Development
Raul Cota completed his Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Monterrey, Mexico. He proceeded to complete his M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of Calgary while beginning work at VMG in 2003. Raul is the original developer and architect of the VMGSim steady-state engine and currently leads the overall development of the program. Raul's interests are focused on distillation, sulfur, natural gas simulation, software architecture and development in general.
GLEN HAY, M. Eng., P. Eng.
VP Business Development
Glen Hay received a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary. He continued on to complete a Master's Degree graduating in 2003 in the area of advanced process control. Glen joined Virtual Materials Group in 2003 as a research and development engineer. Currently he works as the VP of Business Development in Calgary, Canada, and regularly gets involved in new technology projects internationally. Glen’s experience and interests are focused on reactors, heat transfer units, and overall plant modeling and optimization.
DEAN HENLEY, M. Eng, P. Eng.
Dean completed his Bachelor's and Master's in Chemical Engineering at the University of Calgary spending 8 years as a production engineer after graduation. He later transitioned into the process simulation industry and was at Hyprotech for 7 years and most recently at OSIsoft for 9 years. With over 20 years of experience in the process simulation industry and experience in the field with production and gas plants, Dean is a valuable asset to VMG.
JUAN MONTELONGO, Ph.D.
Global Support Manager
Juan Montelongo received his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Monterrey, Mexico. He gained extensive field experience in a variety of processing industries while doing environmental consulting with ERM in Mexico. He completed his Ph.D. in 2010 at the University of Calgary on the subject of developing controllability indices using exergy; controlling processes based on thermodynamic efficiency. Juan joined VMG in 2008 as a research and development scientist and now serves as the global support manager for our 11 worldwide offices.

WILLIAM (BILL) Y. SVRCEK, Ph.D., P. Eng.
Chairman of the Board
After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, Bill Svrcek worked for Monsanto and the University of Western Ontario. Later, at the University of Calgary, he developed an enviable research and teaching record from 1975 until his retirement as an Emeritus Professor in 2008. Bill functioned as principal, director and President of Hyprotech Ltd. from 1981-1993 establishing it as a leading international software company. During his time at the University of Calgary he pursued research in the area of dynamic and steady-state modeling of processes, particularly distillation towers. His group at the Unviversity has generated virtually all of the experimental data on viscosity and gas solubility for systems involving bitumens. Bill joined VMG as its president in 2002.
MICHAEL HILL, MBA, P. Eng.
Michael’s career began with a B.Sc in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta followed by an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. Michael brings to VMG over two decades of corporate finance experience with public and private companies along with corporate development, operational strategy, mergers and acquisitions, shareholder communications and strategic financial planning experience. He also has board of director and audit committee chairperson experience with both public and private companies. Michael Hill is currently CFO of Cathedral Energy Services Inc., which provides directional drilling and production testing equipment and services to the energy industry in the US and Canada. He is also President of Mission Capital Inc., a corporate finance services advisory company.
STEVE THOMPSON, P. Eng.
Steve’s career began with a C.E.T in Civil Technology from BCIT followed by a B.Sc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary. The path then lead him into a technical engineering role growing into project management and general management of the companies he was involved with. Steve has sat on various public boards in the Reserve committee and Audit chair capacity. Steve Thompson has over two decades of experience in the energy industry including a background in engineering, operations, reserves, drilling completions and capital markets. He has also been the past principle in two EPCM companies growing them from inception to medium size EPCM firms. He is currently Vice President at Grey Owl Engineering which provides EPCM services to the energy industry globally.
CRAIG MORRIS, M. Eng., P. Eng.
Craig has a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and a Master's Degree, also in Chemical Engineering, from the University of Calgary. In 1980 he joined Hyprotech as a partner and became its first employee. Craig was the original author of the process simulator Hysim and remained at Hyprotech as a principal author until his departure in 1992. In 1999 Craig helped found Virtual Materials Group and while never an employee of the company, has followed its development closely.
